Abstract: Lack of public support for some scientific research and technologies has been attributed to a variety of factors, including low levels of factual knowledge about science. However, while textbook factual knowledge is frequently associated with positive attitudes toward science, other factors – which should be unrelated to attitudes – are often more important. This discussion will provide a broad overview of the dynamics at play and what this means for effectively communicating controversial science.
